The 10-Minute Weekly Grooming Routine That Prevents Vet Visits
Grooming sounds like something you either pay for or put off. But a short weekly routine at home does something a monthly salon visit can't: it catches small problems — a mat, a skin irritation, an overgrown nail — before they turn into a vet bill.
Here's a ten-minute routine that works for both cats and dogs. You don't need special equipment or a cooperative pet — just consistency.
Brush
Brushing does more than tidy the coat — it spreads natural oils, loosens dead hair before it becomes a hairball, and lets your hands find lumps, ticks, or sore spots you'd otherwise miss. Long-haired pets need it most, but even short coats benefit. Work in the direction the fur grows and keep it gentle.
Check ears and eyes
A quick look inside the ears — you're checking for redness, dark buildup, or a smell, all early signs of infection. Wipe away any gunk from the corners of the eyes with a soft damp cloth. This takes seconds and catches issues that get expensive if ignored.
Handle the paws
Press each paw gently to extend the nails and check the length. If you hear clicking on hard floors, they're too long. Even if you're not trimming today, handling the paws regularly makes future nail trims far less of a battle — the pet gets used to it.
Teeth and a final once-over
Dental problems are one of the most common — and most preventable — health issues in pets. A quick brush with pet-safe toothpaste a few times a week makes a real difference. Finish with a light run of your hands over the whole body, noting anything that's changed since last week.
Why bother?
Because almost everything on this list is something a vet would otherwise find later, when it's harder and costlier to treat. A mat becomes a skin infection. An overgrown nail changes how a dog walks. Ear buildup becomes an infection. Ten minutes a week is cheap insurance — and most pets, once they're used to it, come to enjoy the attention.
